Somali Forces Seize Al-Shabaab Stronghold in Southern Region
Officials from the Defense Ministry stated that troops are working to secure the Hawaadley area in Middle Shabelle as part of the recently launched Operation Badr, a military campaign aimed at dismantling locations used by the group as “safe havens.”
The ministry added that forces continue to hunt down remaining fighters and are conducting clearance operations in areas recently reclaimed from the al-Qaeda-linked organization. Several Al-Shabaab positions and storage facilities were reportedly destroyed during the offensive.
Both the ministry and army command emphasized that counterterrorism efforts “will continue to intensify.”
As part of the broader Operation Badr, the ministry introduced Operation Rolling Thunder on March 1. This campaign receives support from international allies, including Ugandan troops deployed under the African Union mission (AUSSOM).
Al-Shabaab has waged an insurgency against Somalia’s government for over 16 years, frequently targeting civilians, officials, and security personnel. Since last July, Somali forces, alongside AUSSOM and other international partners, have intensified operations against the group.
The UN Security Council renewed AUSSOM’s mandate for another year in December, extending authorization for the mission until December 31 through a resolution backed by the United Kingdom.
