EU Prolongs Zimbabwe Arms Ban Through 2027
The decision came after the bloc’s yearly assessment of punitive measures placed on the southern African country, according to a statement issued Tuesday by the Council of the European Union.
While the arms ban remains in force, the Council removed all outstanding measures concerning travel prohibitions and asset freezes targeting certain individuals and organizations. This development follows the 2025 removal of Zimbabwe Defense Industries from the sanctions list, marking the final entity to be delisted.
"The EU remains constructively engaged with Zimbabwe and looks forward to deepening the bilateral relations across a broad range of areas of mutual interest, including on trade and investment," the statement said, noting that the impact of the restrictions would continue to be evaluated in response to any forthcoming changes.
On Feb. 15, 2011, the Council introduced restrictive actions in response to conditions in Zimbabwe, which have since been periodically renewed and modified over time.
"This decision replaced the legal framework for measures already in place since Feb. 18, 2002. The council decision and council regulation adopted today reflect the decision to maintain and extend the existing arms embargo in view of the situation in Zimbabwe," it added.
The Council initially enacted sanctions and the weapons embargo in February 2002, citing grave and widespread human rights abuses, including politically motivated violence and a "reign of terror" that led to fatalities and mass displacement.
